Brighton Developers, Jon Clark and Ron Turner, turned to MHM for help in the adaptive reuse design of a row of 19th century industrial buildings into apartments in Knoxville’s historic Old City. Most famously the long-time home to the John H. Daniel men’s tailoring company, the new apartment building is known as The Daniel. Designed to maximize the available space, the 69 units range in size from 460 to 1,600 square feet with studios, one and two bedroom units.
Street level space along Jackson Avenue is occupied by local retail establishments. Existing building materials and features were retained throughout to convey the history of the structures. A central stair/elevator tower and two additional egress stair towers anchor the heavy timber structure. The exterior was restored using the United States Department of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation, making The Daniel a remarkable example of Knoxville’s architectural and cultural history.
