PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The historic Andrew Johnson Hotel, a prominent landmark in Knoxville, Tennessee, is undergoing an exciting transformation back to its original purpose as a boutique hotel. Originally constructed during the Roaring Twenties, when downtown Knoxville was the commercial and entertainment hub of East Tennessee, the building has since served a variety of roles, including office space. Today, with the resurgence of downtown through decades of public and private investment, the Andrew Johnson Hotel will once again shine as a centerpiece of the Tennessee Valley.

MHM is honored to serve as the architect of record for this mixed-use renovation project, which will act as a catalyst for the south end of Gay Street. The AJ residences will inject vibrant activity into a dormant area, connecting downtown Knoxville with the emerging South Waterfront developments.

With extensive expertise in boutique hospitality and historic preservation, MHM is crafting a design that preserves the building’s unique character while incorporating modern amenities. The restoration will celebrate the hotel’s original architectural details, blending historic charm with contemporary luxury to create a sophisticated guest experience. Once completed, the Andrew Johnson Hotel will reclaim its place as a premier destination in downtown Knoxville.
