PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Lonsdale Elementary School is a Design-Build project with Rouse Construction. The 94,000 s.f. facility for 600 students serves a tight-knit, unique community in Northwest Knoxville. Designed as a phased replacement school, it was constructed next to their original/occupied school, allowing for minimal disruption of school activities. The project is also one of the first Knox County Schools projects that meet new code-compliant Storm Shelter requirements. Despite challenging schedules due to the pandemic, the project opened for the 2022 school year.

The school is designed to fit efficiently onto a challenging, urban site and meet Knox County’s rigorous program standards, as well as the community’s priorities. A lifted play yard and courtyard elevate a secure outdoor area above an adjacent creek. Reflecting school pride, the school colors are used throughout the interiors to creatively aid way-finding and highlight functional zones within the building.

This facility contains a single gymnasium constructed from load-bearing masonry walls with steel joist roof framing. The gymnasium has six basketball goals for the main court and two smaller side-by-side courts. It also includes a stage centered on one side of the gym for assemblies.
