Athens Prek-12 SCHOOL

YEAR:
Planned Completion Fall 2023

LOCATION:
Athens, TN

SIZE:
178,500 sf

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Designed around a concept of two schools under one roof, this new 1,340 student facility was designed to maintain two independent schools as separate primary and intermediate wings. These two wings are connected by a ‘knowledge avenue’ with common core and shared resources such as a single kitchen serving two dining spaces, gymnasiums, a library, and art, music, and STEM classrooms. To optimize utilization of the site, classrooms will be two-story wings framing the central core functions all of which are organized around an outdoor courtyard.

The new facility is being built on the existing City Park Primary School site, adjacent to Athens City Middle School creating a single PreK-8 campus with two facilities. This new facility will consolidate Athens City's five-school system into a two-school system, which is a result of their recent Facility Assessments and Strategic Planning efforts.

MHM is providing project management, programming, design, construction documentation, and construction administration services in a collaborative consulting role with Design Innovation Architects. The Facility Assessments and Strategic Planning, as well as the conceptual design that led to this project, is the individual experience of Aaron Miller while Director of Education and Senior Project Architect at Design Innovation Architects.

The project is being delivered in the Design-Bid-Build delivery method. There is a $750,000 contingency within the contractor's scope for the project with another sizable 5% contingency outside in the Owner’s non-construction costs.
